Meet Mississippi native and the most recent winner of the Top Design Competition at Fashion Week New Orleans, Ashley Gunkel. Born in Ocean City and educated at Mississippi State University, this southern designer has travelled the world and trained in both London and New York before returning home to wow fashion audiences in the Gulf South.
Noted for impeccable construction and an eye for detail, Ashley won the Top Design Competition in March of 2013 and has already translated that success into a broader distribution for her brand. She is carried in local boutique Hemline as well as online at ashleygunkel.com. For her upcoming Spring 2014 line, Gunkel plans to create ready-to-wear pieces with a couture feel involving unexpected details. “I love surprise accents and back detail; my designs are generally more dramatic in the back,” she explains.
In addition to construction and details, the designer also fosters an appreciation for color and mixed media. In a city noted for flair and unexpected traditions, it’s no wonder that Ashley Gunkel designs have found a home.
