Every year, New Orleans’ City Park decks out its grounds in twinkling lights, festive ornaments and fanciful sculptures. Called “Celebration in the Oaks,” the winter holiday tradition has been around since 1984.
Besides the lights, park visitors can enjoy night rides at Carousel Gardens and walk through Storyland (one of my favorite places since I was a kid visiting Jonah and the Whale). Grab some hot chocolate or buttered rum and check it out, but make sure to bundle up. This year there’s even an ice-skating rink. See you there!

One of my favorite events of the year. A great way to start the holiday season!
I want to go! It’s been great weather for evening strolling, too.
I am a very uncoordinated and awkward looking ice skater, but I might risk the embarrassment to go skate this year, I’m marking my calendar!
